Ancient origins
The earliest known mosaics date back to Mesopotamia around 3000 BCE. But it was the Greeks and Romans who truly elevated mosaic to a fine art — Roman floors were decorated with extraordinarily detailed scenes created from tiny tesserae of stone, glass, and terracotta. Some of the finest survive today in Pompeii.
Byzantine brilliance
The Byzantine Empire took mosaic to its most spectacular heights. Gold and silver tesserae transformed church interiors into shimmering spaces. The mosaics of Ravenna in Italy, dating from the 5th and 6th centuries, are among the greatest artistic achievements of any era.
Islamic geometric tradition
Islamic art developed a breathtaking mosaic tradition based on complex geometric patterns. Known as zellige, these intricate tilework designs adorn mosques and palaces throughout the Islamic world and continue to inspire contemporary mosaic artists worldwide.
The modern craft revival
