Grouting transforms a collection of tiles into a finished mosaic — and it's much simpler than it looks. Whether you've just completed your first kit or you're working on an independent project, this guide walks you through the process from start to finish.
What you'll need
Before you begin, gather: unsanded grout (for gaps under 3mm) or sanded grout (for wider gaps), a mixing bowl, palette knife, grout float or stiff sponge, bucket of clean water, and old cloths. All our adult mosaic kits include grout and mixing tools. For independent projects, our mosaic supplies stock a range of grout colours.
Step 1: Make sure the adhesive is fully dry
Wait at least 24 hours after placing tiles. Press gently on a few tiles to check there's no movement before proceeding. Rushing this step is the most common beginner mistake.
Step 2: Mix your grout
Add water gradually, mixing until you reach a smooth peanut-butter consistency. Mix only as much as you can use in 20–30 minutes, as grout begins to set quickly.
Step 3: Apply the grout
Spread grout over your mosaic using a float, pressing firmly into all the gaps. Work in circular motions and cover the entire surface. Don't worry about getting grout on the tile faces — it cleans up easily.
Step 4: Clean up and buff
Wait 10–15 minutes, then clean tile surfaces with a damp sponge. After full curing (24–48 hours), buff with a dry cloth to reveal the finished shine. Our mosaic workshops cover grouting in person, and The Spruce Crafts has a detailed grouting troubleshooting guide.
