Walk into any craft supplier and you'll find a bewildering range of adhesives and grouts. Choosing the wrong product can lead to tiles falling off or cracking in cold weather. This guide cuts through the confusion.
Indoor vs outdoor: the most important distinction
Indoor projects can use water-based PVA adhesive and standard grout. Outdoor projects — stepping stones, garden ornaments — must use waterproof, frost-proof adhesive and exterior grout. Using indoor products outside will result in cracking and tile loss. Our mosaic supplies clearly label which products are suitable for outdoor use.
Adhesive types
PVA adhesive is beginner-friendly — water-based and easy to clean up on porous surfaces indoors. Cement-based adhesive is stronger and fully waterproof, essential for outdoor projects. Silicone adhesive is flexible and moisture-resistant, ideal for curved surfaces. All our adult mosaic kits include the correct adhesive for the project.
Grout types
Unsanded grout for gaps smaller than 3mm gives a smooth, fine finish. Sanded grout for gaps of 3mm and above. Epoxy grout is extremely durable and stain-resistant — ideal for kitchen and bathroom projects. Grout colour makes a significant difference to the finished look.
Getting it right
Our mosaic workshops are an excellent opportunity to see different products in use and ask material questions directly. Hobbycraft also has a useful online guide to adhesive and grout selection.
