WHAT IS KINUSAIGA?
Kinusaiga is a beautiful Japanese textile art traditionally associated with repurposing pieces of kimono silk.
Instead of stitching pieces of fabric together, fabric is placed over individual sections of a design and the edges are carefully tucked into grooves in the board.
The result is a wonderfully tactile piece of textile artwork that looks somewhere between patchwork, appliqué and mosaic - without the sewing!
At Box Clever Crafts, we call it Fabric Mosaic.
PERFECT FOR USING YOUR FABRIC STASH
This is also a brilliant way of turning all those little pieces of fabric you've been saving into something beautiful.
Use:
Fabric remnants • quilting cotton • old clothing • offcuts • patterned fabric • treasured scraps • unwanted garments
An old shirt, dress or other piece of clothing can become part of a completely new piece of artwork.
It's a lovely way to reuse, repurpose and get creative with textiles you already own.
CHOOSE YOUR OWN COLOURS
There are no rules about which fabrics you have to use.
Follow the colours shown in our examples or completely reinvent the design.
A woodland scene could become bright and contemporary.
A flower could be created from a favourite old dress.
A beach hut could use a mixture of colourful remnants.
Same pattern. Completely different result.
That's what makes Fabric Mosaic so much fun.
A LOVELY RELAXING HOBBY
Fabric Mosaic is wonderfully absorbing.
Working through your design one section at a time gives you an opportunity to slow down, concentrate on something creative and enjoy the satisfaction of watching your picture gradually emerge.
It's suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced textile crafters looking for something different.
And because there's no sewing required, you don't need a sewing machine or any previous sewing experience.
